Deterrence and Reassurance explores the intersections of power, language, military presence, and geopolitics through the artistic practice of Toril Johannessen. Working across various media, Johannessen investigates how historical conditions, technological developments, and systems of knowledge shape our perception and understanding of the world.

Published in connection with Johannessen’s 2024 Bergen International Festival Exhibition, Deterrence and Reassurance extends the exhibition’s historical, military, and cartographic inquiries through three newly commissioned essays. Written by Hanne Hammer Stien, Philippe Rekacewicz, and Ingeborg Hjorth, the texts examine the political and social conditions underlying contemporary geopolitics while engaging with Johannessen’s artistic methods and research.

The publication also includes a series of paper inserts featuring Johannessen’s own notes and photographs, tracing the development of the project from its earliest stages. Together, these materials offer insight into the processes of research, observation, and artistic production that inform her work.

Designed by Petri Henriksson of Blank Blank Studio, the book is edited by Silja Leifsdottir and Mai Lahn-Johannessen and is co-published by Bergen Kunsthall and Mondo Books.
